Fame. Everyone seems to want to be famous, to be known, to be celebrated. Why is that? Everyone wants to be noticed, I guess. They want to be acknowledged and recognised; to have that feeling that they matter in the world. I’m sure that many of us feel invisible at times and it can be a persistent unnerving feeling to shake off. There are those who have that desire wish to be looked up by others and some just want to have that assurance that they’ll be remembered.
Not only those it include the social status but in financial terms as well. When you’re famous or well-known, it seems life is set for you: money at your disposal, all the comfort and luxuries that you could ask for, be waited upon hand and foot. Not having to do all the arduous and tedious work that the common folk would have to do. At a glance, it does seem like quite the sweet life but then again with every lifestyle, including those of the rich and famous, there are still cons. I guess we’ll never really know until we’ve lived it.
What I think people miss out the very essence of being recognised and ‘famous’ is that each one of them, from musicians to actors to fashion designers, is that they make changes in the world we live in. While many of us strive to fit in, these people have chosen the difficult path to stand out, be noticed, risk criticism, to make a difference. That’s what people tend to miss. Their fame is only the result of that difficult trials and troubles they’ve been through. We don’t see their journey to reach where they are now, thus we think it’s an easy trip to the top.
Of course not every celebrity has a reason to be famous. There are always the people who become famous because of the nonsensical and controversial things they do in public. I never said that the change the people make is always a positive one. It happens both ways: people become recognised for good and bad things too. Nonetheless, the actions they done, the words said have made them stand out and thus named ‘celebrities’. To be honest, I’d rather not call them ‘celebrities’ as there really isn’t anything good to celebrate about them.
Even now, people I know aspire to become ‘famous’… but the thing is, their aim should never to be famous but to make a change and do something they love to do but to each person’s own, I guess.
In our everyday lives, we have ‘mini-celebrities’ that make changes in our world; it’s just we don’t notice these unsung heroes.
I know I sound like some big-shot philosopher but there was a time I wished I was famous. I’m human, aren’t I? Haha! All I’m saying is that there are some things that are worth being passionate about other than wanting to be famous. Focus your time and energy on something you enjoy and enjoy doing it.
